ChatGPT’s MCP integration has significant limitations. Most users will get better results using Civic Chat or a supported client.

Current Status

ChatGPT supports MCP connectors in two narrow scenarios:
  • Developer mode — available to individual users with developer access enabled in ChatGPT settings
  • Team/Enterprise admin accounts — available to workspace admins managing connectors for their organization
If you don’t fall into one of these categories, MCP connectors are not accessible in your ChatGPT account.

Known Limitations

Even when MCP is accessible, ChatGPT’s tool-use behavior with external MCP servers produces inconsistent results:
  • Tool calls may not fire reliably on the first attempt
  • Multi-step tool workflows often require manual re-prompting
  • Authentication flows can interrupt conversations in ways that are hard to recover from
  • ChatGPT’s tool selection logic doesn’t always pick the right MCP tool for the task
We recommend using Civic Chat, Claude Desktop, or another supported client for a more reliable experience.

Setup (Developer / Admin Only)

If you have developer mode or team admin access and want to try it:
1

Enable MCP in ChatGPT

In ChatGPT, go to SettingsConnectors (or Integrations, depending on your account type). This option only appears if you have developer mode or admin access enabled.
2

Add a custom connector

Click Add connector and enter:
  • URL: https://nexus.civic.com/hub/mcp
  • Name: Civic
3

Authenticate

Follow the OAuth flow to connect your Civic account.
